When to play this or that

This or that needs no setup, no paper and no explaining. Answers take a second, so it fits anywhere a group has a few minutes to fill, and one phone passed around the circle is all you need.

Waiting in line

Read a card aloud while the line creeps forward. Seasons and weather and Food and drink are quick enough to finish before you reach the front.

The first minutes of a class or meeting

A few picks from Would you pick get a quiet room talking and help new faces learn something small about each other.

Family dinner

Let each person at the table read one card aloud. Grandparents and kids can answer the same pair, and the results are often surprising.

Ways to play this or that

Answer on a count of three

One player reads the card, everyone counts “one, two, three” together and shouts a pick on three. Nobody gets to wait and copy the person next to them.

Pick a side of the room

In a classroom or a big living room, point to one wall for the first option and the opposite wall for the second. Players walk to their side, look around at who joined them, then come back to the middle for the next card.

A fast round of 20

Swipe through 20 cards as fast as the group can answer, with no explaining allowed. When the round is over, go back to the pick that split the group most evenly and let a few people say why.

Tips for a good round

  • There are no wrong answers. A split down the middle is as much fun as everyone choosing the same thing.
  • If someone truly cannot choose, let them say “both” once per round, then they have to commit.
  • On a road trip, the passenger reads and the driver answers last, so eyes stay on the road.

Frequently asked questions

How many this or that questions are there?

There are 150 questions, 25 in each of six categories: food and drink, free time, places and travel, seasons and weather, pop culture and media, and would you pick. The cards and the list on this page use the same set.

Is there a version of this or that for couples?

Yes. This or that for couples is a two-player game: each of you picks in secret on one phone, and both answers appear together. Its pairs are different from the ones on this page.

Are these questions okay for kids and the classroom?

Yes. Every pair is about food, hobbies, places, weather, stories or small daily habits, so they work from about age ten up. They make a good warm-up at the start of a lesson or a two-minute break between tasks.

What is the difference between this or that and would you rather?

This or that is a split-second pick between two plain things, like a snack or a season. Would you rather questions give two made-up situations and usually lead to a longer talk about why.
