When to play never have I ever with a group
Never have I ever turns small, ordinary experiences into stories. Nobody needs to be good at anything to play, and the quiet person in the room often turns out to have the best tale.
Sleepovers
Lights low, sleeping bags in a circle, and Embarrassing or At home read aloud until somebody starts yawning.
Family gatherings
Grandparents, cousins and kids can all answer the same card. Travel and places and Skills and firsts bring out stories the younger ones have never heard.
A new team or club
In the first week, a few cards from Food and Skills and firsts show who has baked bread or ridden a unicycle, without putting anyone on the spot.
Ways to play never have I ever
The ten-finger classic
Everyone holds up ten fingers. Pass one phone around the circle so each player reads the next card aloud, and anyone who has done the thing on it puts a finger down. When your fingers run out, tell the story behind the last one, then everybody starts again with ten.
Stand up, sit down
A points-free version for classrooms: the teacher reads a card and everyone who has done it stands. Nobody counts anything. Ask one person who is standing for a single sentence about it, then the whole class sits for the next card.
Two players or a long drive
With just two of you, take turns reading and both answer “I have” or “I have not”. On a road trip the passenger reads, everyone in the car answers, and any “I have” earns one follow-up question from the others.
Tips for a good round
- Match the category to the crowd: School and work for classmates, At home and Food for a family table, Travel and places for a car full of people.
- A lowered finger is an invitation, not a duty. Anyone can say “pass” and keep the story for another day.
- In a big group, only the first person to put a finger down tells the story, so the round keeps moving.

Frequently asked questions
How many never have I ever questions are there?
There are 150 questions, 25 in each of six categories: food, travel and places, school and work, at home, embarrassing, and skills and firsts. The cards and the list on this page use the same set.
Is there a never have I ever game for couples?
Yes. Never have I ever for couples is made for two: both players’ hands are shown on the screen, and you tap a finger down instead of counting on your own. Its statements are different from the ones on this page.
Can kids play never have I ever, or a whole class?
Yes. Every card is about food, places, school, home or small skills, with no romance and nothing private, so the deck works from about age ten. The embarrassing ones are the kind everyone laughs about, like pushing a door marked pull.
What should we play after never have I ever?
Try would you rather questions. Instead of asking what you have done, they ask what you would pick between two made-up situations, so even the quietest player has an answer.
