When to play rapid fire questions
Rapid fire rounds suit the moments that are too short for a long talk and too long to stand in silence. Ten cards take a couple of minutes, and the answers leave you with plenty to come back to.
In line for a film or a table
Warm-up and Quick picks need no setup, and a round of ten is usually over before the line moves.
Early dates
Firsts and lasts gets past small talk quickly, and one-word answers mean nobody feels put on the spot.
Over an anniversary dinner
Us in a word, one card each between courses. Three words about your story can say more than a long speech.
Ways to play rapid fire
On a count of three
Read the card, count to three out loud, and both say your answer at the same moment. Two different answers are as much fun as a match.
Ten without stopping
One of you reads ten cards in a row while the other answers each one straight away, then you swap. Nobody adds reasons until the tenth answer is out.
Back to the surprise
When the round is over, each of you picks the answer from the other that you least expected and asks for the story behind it.
Keeping the pace up
- Stay in one category per round. The rhythm holds better when the questions feel alike.
- “Pass” is a fine answer. Say it quickly and draw the next card.
- Save the hearts for the answers you want to come back to later.

Frequently asked questions
How many rapid fire questions for couples are there?
There are 100 questions, 20 in each of five categories: warm-up, firsts and lasts, us in a word, quick picks, and out of nowhere. The cards and the list on this page use the same set.
What makes an answer “rapid”?
It is the first thing that comes to mind, said in a word or a short phrase within a second or two. The reasons, the backstory and the “well, actually” all wait until the round ends.
How is this different from this or that?
This or that hands you two options to choose between. These cards are open, so the answer can be anything at all, which is where the unexpected ones come from.
Do we need a timer?
No. The count of three, or simply the pace of the person reading, keeps things quick. If you like a timer, set one minute on a phone and see how far you get through a category together.
