When to play the hot seat

The hot seat works when you have time to give one person your full attention. Taking turns means each of you gets a stretch of being properly listened to, which is rarer than it sounds on a busy week.

A date night at home

After dinner, a few rounds each, starting with Warm-up and ending on Big picture. It turns a quiet evening into one with real news in it.

When one of you has had a big day

Put them in the seat first. A run of Honest opinions and Small confessions is a gentle way to change the subject and get them talking.

A long train or car ride

The driver takes the seat while the passenger reads the cards, then you swap at the next stop. For one-word answers on the move, try rapid-fire questions.

Ways to play the hot seat

Five cards, then swap

One of you sits in the seat while the other reads five cards in a row. The person in the seat may pass once per round, and after the fifth card you trade places.

The asker picks the category

Whoever is reading chooses the category from the menu for each card, starting with Warm-up and moving toward About us or Big picture as the seat warms up.

Two minutes in the seat

Set a timer on your phone for two minutes and see how many cards the person in the seat gets through. Longer answers are welcome; the clock only decides when to swap.

Keeping the hot seat comfortable

  • The seat is for curiosity, not cross-examination. Ask the next card rather than picking apart the last answer.
  • Save follow-ups for after the swap, when both of you have had a turn.
  • An answer that surprises you is a good answer. You are learning something new, not checking a box.

Frequently asked questions

How many hot seat questions for couples are there?

There are 100 questions, 20 in each of five categories: warm-up, honest opinions, small confessions, about us, and big picture. The cards and the list on this page use the same set.

How is the hot seat different from rapid fire or truth or dare?

In rapid fire both of you blurt out one-word answers, and in truth or dare every turn is a choice between a question and a task. In the hot seat one person answers a whole run of questions in their own words, so the focus stays on them for a while.

Are the small confessions embarrassing?

Only mildly. They are about guilty-pleasure songs, stubborn moments and unread books, nothing that would be awkward to say in front of friends.

Is the hot seat a good game for a new couple?

Yes, if you stay with Warm-up and Honest opinions for the first rounds. About us works better once you have a few months of stories to draw on.
