When to ask funny questions
Funny questions work best when a group needs to loosen up and nobody wants to talk about anything serious. Nobody needs to know anyone well to answer them, and one phone passed around is all the kit you need.
Family dinner
Food and Animals cards give everyone at the table, from grandparents down, the same easy question, and the answers are usually funnier than anyone expected.
A sleepover
Make-believe and Funny stories keep a room full of friends going long after the lights are supposed to be out.
The last minutes of a team meeting
One Name it or Silly questions card ends the session on a laugh, and nobody has to share anything personal.
Ways to play with funny questions
Pass the phone to the biggest laugh
One player reads a card and everyone answers in turn. The reader hands the phone to whoever made them laugh first, and that player reads the next card. Nobody keeps score, so the phone just wanders around the room.
Stay in character
Made for two people or a small group. Draw a Make-believe card and answer it as the umbrella, the garden gnome or the slice of bread in the toaster. The others then ask you one more question, and you have to stay in character for that answer too.
Sticky-note round
At a team lunch or around a dinner table, read one Name it card aloud. Everyone writes an answer on a scrap of paper, the papers go into a bowl, and one person reads them all out without saying who wrote which.
Tips for a funny round
- Say the first answer that pops into your head. The funniest ones rarely come from thinking hard.
- Laugh with the answer, not at the person. The cards are about spoons, snails and soup, so nobody has to be the joke.
- Funny stories need a minute. Give the storyteller room, and draw a quick Silly questions card right after to keep the pace up.
