When to ask yes or no questions
Yes or no questions fit into the small gaps of a day. The first answer takes a second, so you can stop after one card or keep going for an hour, and the why behind each answer is where you learn something new about each other.
Long drives
What if and Opinions keep the car talking between playlists, and one word is enough when the road needs attention.
Waiting for a table
A few Easy ones fill the ten minutes before your name is called, with no setup and nothing to explain.
A tired weeknight
When neither of you has energy for a long talk, thumbs up or down on the couch still turns into a real conversation.
Ways to play yes or no
Thumbs on three
Read the card, count to three, and both show a thumb up or down at the same moment. Two thumbs alike and two thumbs apart are equally good news: each one comes with a reason worth hearing.
Guess first
Before your partner answers, say out loud what you think they will pick. Then they give the real answer and one sentence of why, and you swap roles for the next card.
Turn a double yes into a plan
Stay on About us and save every card you both say yes to. By the end of the evening the hearts on this device hold a short list of things to try together.
Getting more out of a one-word answer
- Stuck between the two? Say “sometimes” and tell your partner when.
- Keep the yes or no quick and the why as long as it wants to be.
- A yes next to a no is not a problem to solve. It is two different stories, and you get to hear both.

Frequently asked questions
How many yes or no questions for couples are there?
There are 100 questions, 20 in each of five categories: easy ones, opinions, about you, about us, and what if. The cards and the list on this page use the same set.
How is this different from never have i ever?
In never have i ever you answer about things you have already done. These cards ask what you like, think or would do, so the answers can change from one year to the next. For picking between two options, try this or that.
Do yes or no questions work on a first date?
Easy ones and Opinions need no shared history, so they fit a first or second date well. About us makes more sense once there is an us. For more openers, see first date questions.
Can the driver play on a road trip?
Yes. The passenger reads the card and the driver answers out loud instead of with a thumb, with both hands and eyes kept on the road.
